The Massachusetts Hunter Education Program is conducting a Basic Hunter Education course. Upon  successful completion of the Basic Hunter Education course, all students will receive a Massachusetts Hunter Education Certificate. This certificate of completion allows persons, 15 years of age or older to purchase a MA hunting or sporting license. It also allows young men and women between 15 and 17 years old to hunt alone on their first Massachusetts hunting license. All U.S. States, Canada and Mexico recognize this government issued certificate of completion for the purchase of a hunting or sporting license.

Successful completion of this course fulfills the requirements established by Mass General Law to make application with your licensing authority for a Class A or B License to Carry Firearms, or a Firearms Identification Card. Check with your local police to fulfill all firearms licensing requirements.

Each year certified volunteer instructors hold more than 70 hunter education courses throughout the state. Courses are scheduled over 5-6 weekday nights. Students must attend every session. Students, ages 10 and older, are encouraged to participate. Parental permission is required of all students under 18 years of age. All courses are conducted free of charge.

HALIFAX

Summer Smash tourney

Halifax Girls Softball will hold its annual “Summer Smash” fundraising tourney Aug.6-8 at the Halifax elementary school and police station complexes. The Summer Smash has grown into the largest sporting event in town history and will again play host to 40 teams from throughout the state. This tournament is also the Girls Softball league’s primary fundraising source and helps keeps registration rates low for players and their families. There will be six Halifax Hurricanes All-Star teams entered, so come on down and support the home teams. There will also be food, beverages, ice cream and candy, as well as a “closest to the pin” prize hole, raffles, bounce-houses, guest appearances and entertainment for the whole family.

Advertisement space is again available in both the large tournament flyer and on the fences overlooking the field complexes. Contact Laura Murphy at 781-294-9256 or e-mail Murphy@fr.com if interested in ad space or contributing in any way.

Summer Youth Track Series

The Silver Lake boys and girls program will be hosting a Summer Youth Track Meet series on Tuesday nights during the summer at the high school track. There will be a variety of races from the 50-meter dash up to the mile for boys and girls ages 3-14  (Pre School to 8th Grade). Participation is free and awards will be given to all participants. The Silver Lake coaching staff along with some athletes of the boys and girls’ athletes will supervise the events. The track meets are scheduled for the following Tuesday nights: July 13, 20, and 27.

Silver Lake Football looks to expand football program

For the 2010 season Silver Lake Football is trying to expand the youth program with additional age appropriate teams. Currently, the program consists of four playing levels, Mighty Mites, Mites, Pee-wees and Midgets. If the right number of applicants registers, the 9-year-olds (Mites), 11-year-olds (Peewees), and 13/14-year-olds (Midgets) will continue to play an OCYFL division 2 schedule. This will include teams from Taunton, Hanover, Dennis Yarmouth, Duxbury and Middleboro. Silver Lake Football is looking to have the 8-year-olds (Mites), 10-year-olds (Peewees), and 12-year-olds (Midgets) play in a division 5 schedule. This will include towns from Hanover, Hingham, Taunton, Duxbury, Bridgewater, Marshfield and Scituate. These additional teams will create a competitive (Varsity) and non-competitive (Junior Varsity) schedule for every age appropriate team within the program. The 7-year-olds (Mighty Mites) will remain a non-competitive instructional level.

SLYF is hoping by separating teams by single age brackets, made of Varsity and Junior Varsity players for each age group bracket listed below, will create more playing time for the kids each weekend. This is all dependent on the number of per age level applicants received; if there is not the right number of applicants Silver Lake Football will be unable to create additional teams. Silver Lake Football looks forward to meeting this challenge and continuing in the tradition of Silver Lake’s strong football programs. Visit the website at www.slwarriors.com for more information.
